Founded in 1963 to save iconic Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project, Scenic Hudson is credited with launching the modern grassroots environmental movement. Today, with more than 25,000 ardent supporters, they are the largest environmental group in the region. In Cold Spring and Garrison, Scenic Hudson is responsible for the development, revitalization, and conservation of the West Point Foundry Preserve, Manitou Point Preserve, and Foundry Dock Park which were transformed into public parks for the enjoyment of nature, history, and recreation.
In the face of new and ongoing challenges — as well as the effects of climate change — they remain committed to making the Hudson Valley a great place to live, work and play by preserving and strengthening the region’s great assets — beautiful open spaces, working farms, and historic cities and town centers.
Scenic Hudson is the 2021 recipient of the Cobblestone Award, given to a business or organization that helps support progressive evolution and secure structures in our community whether through building social, historic, sustainable, ecological, or physical structures to support society.
Protecting land for people has been Scenic Hudson’s core mission since its founding. Over the succeeding 58 years, this mission has evolved to include restoring access to nature, rejuvenating riverfront communities, bolstering the region’s economy and reconnecting people with the Hudson River. Last year, in the face of a pandemic, Scenic Hudson did all those things for our town. Most notably, it completed a multi-year effort to preserve Scofield Ridge so that it will never be developed and remain available to our residents for recreation. In addition, its staff members worked with a group of volunteers to help draft a new Comprehensive Plan for Philipstown.
